Pentecost 2020
In January my sister and I were in Rome. We hired a car to go and visit Pompeii and Mt Vesuvius. On the way back down the mountain the car malfunctioned. All sorts of warning lights showed up and it started beeping at me. The problem was that the car systems were all in Italian and I had no idea what it was saying. On top of this we were out of phone range so google translate couldn’t help us. Then and there I learned a lot about how language can be such a barrier. Important, possibly life threatening, messages were being given to me but I couldn’t understand them, so I was stuck. The story of Pentecost is so powerful because it shows us that the Holy Spirit wants to break down language barriers and bring people together through an important message of God’s love for them. The image of reconciliation and fellowship across language divides is stunning. As we celebrate Pentecost this week, let’s celebrate the fact that God broke the communication barrier to bring us the good news and it’s that same good news we want to share with everyone. This Sunday our service will include elements provided by our Territory, including a reflection by Lt Col Lyn Edge about the importance of restoring broken relationships and healing the wounds of racism and exclusion, in this Reconciliation week. Lt Col Terry Grey will be bringing us the Word of God and we’ll be involved in the launch of the Territories new prayer initiative, Pray it Forward.
