Depression

You may not remember but there was a time, in February this year, when health officials were warning that 2020 could have the worst ever flu season. Then covid-19 entered the scene and the government told everyone to get the flu vaccine so the most vulnerable people in our society wouldn’t end up fighting corona virus and the flu at the same time. By the end of May, a remarkable 62% of all Australians had received the standard vaccine and almost 100% of Australians were observing social distancing and isolation rules. The result of this has been (according to the pharmacist who gave me my flu shot) that there hasn’t really been a flu season at all. We can celebrate a victory in our battle with the flu, but not all illnesses and diseases have seen improvement over this same period. Depression, anxiety and other mental health issues are all made worse in times of crisis and social isolation. There is no vaccine for these conditions but there are ways to manage and control them. This week, in our final instalment on the life of Elijah, we will see how Elijah’s emotional state spirals downward as he faces a life-threatening crisis and becomes socially isolated. We will also see a string of miracles that God performs to help Elijah process his thoughts and come to terms with his circumstances. These miracles give us clues as to how we too can find help and offer comfort in our time of social isolation.
