Jesus feeding the 5000 has got to be one of the most well-known miracles performed by Jesus. The transformation of five loaves of bread and two fish into enough food to feed 5000 men plus women and children is truly extraordinary! It is clear this miracle of provision highlights how God is a God who provides. But a key detail is sometimes overlooked.
Why would Jesus make enough for 12 left over baskets? Surely Jesus is not being wasteful. Did he just lose count? That seems possible when catering for a crowd of over 5000!
I think the mystery of the 12 baskets highlights a key aspect of God’s provision. When we consider that the crowd followed Jesus from many towns into the wilderness do you think any hesitated? Did anyone pause to think about what they would have for dinner? Surely someone had the foresight to think about dinner. Where were the mums reminding everyone to bring their coats and pack something for dinner?
There is no doubt this would’ve prevented some people from trekking into the wilderness and experiencing Jesus’ miracle of provision.
But the fact Jesus made 12 baskets leftover shows that God has enough for everyone. I see the mystery of the 12 baskets leftover as a representation of the missed opportunities of those who stayed home.
What would you have done? Would you have chased after Jesus into the wilderness with no promise of food but in full trust that everything would be alright or are you someone who stayed home and missed out on experiencing the miraculous provision of God?
God has enough for everyone but it is up to us whether or not we decide to trust God, turn up and get fed; or stay in the comfort of our own home and potentially miss out on what God has to offer us.
