Faithful in Service

What do people say you always do? “He’s always late.” “She’s always on her phone.” “He’s always striking up conversations with strangers.” “They’re always whinging about something.” “He’s always at the gym.” “She’s always encouraging someone.” “They're always welcoming people. "She's always giving to somebody who's in need.” “He’s always talking about himself.” ”They’re always fussing about how they look.” “He’s always working.” People become known for what they do. What kind of things are you always doing? If someone were to describe your life using the phrases, “He's always”, “They’re always” or, “She's always”, what would they say about you? Who we are is, more often than not, is described by what we do. Acts 9:36 is a powerful verse of scripture that tells us what someone was "always doing”. It tells us, “In Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (in Greek her name is Dorcas); she was always doing good and helping the poor.” What a description! Tabitha was always doing good and helping the poor. For Tabitha, this meant that she made clothing to give to those who were struggling, and she would often serve widows in her community. Her ministry was evidently so important that when she died, God used Peter to raise her back from the dead; and a revival broke out in her community. Instead of “always” being self-promoting in attitude, or selfish, Tabitha was selfless; using what she had to make a difference in other people's lives. Her “always” had an impact. Who she was was seen in what she did. She was faithful in service. We may not all possess the skills required to make clothes like Tabitha, but all of us are called to be faithful in service. We are each invited to make our “always” positively impact our community and reveal more of the God in which we serve. Tune in to this message as we continue our ‘Selfless’ series and consider some biblical examples and what selfless, faithful service may look like today.
