CloseI struggle to sit still. I don’t just mean that I shake my legs while I’m sitting (although I do - it’s called Restless Leg Syndrome apparently). I am just generally restless. It’s particularly bad when I’m at home. Whenever we have a family dinner, I generally only sit there for 5 minutes or so after I finish eating. Shortly after that I feel the need to get up and start clearing plates and washing up (something I’m good at, although I splash water everywhere). It doesn’t matter how late it is, or whether or not we have something to get to after dinner, I have to get up and do something. In our ONE THING story this week, Martha is in the kitchen ‘making things’, working hard, cooking and preparing a meal for Jesus. She is anxious, probably worried about how it will all turn out and whether or not Jesus and the others will like it. In contrast, Mary is in the other room, sitting at Jesus feet, hanging on his every word. Eventually Martha expresses some frustration because Mary isn’t helping. She even asks Jesus to tell Mary to get up and help her. The fact that Martha was worried about so many things gives Jesus the opportunity to teach her, and us, that really, in life, only one thing is really necessary. All other matters and concerns are important but only one thing is necessary.
