Nothing New

“He's Got the Whole World in His Hands” is a traditional African American spiritual, first published in 1927. The song is believed to have been written by Master Sergeant Obie Edwin Philpot. It became an international hit in 1957–58 in a recording by English singer Laurie London. It was the first, and remains, the only gospel song to hit #1 on a U.S. pop singles chart. It has since been recorded by many other singers and choirs. Recently, Tyler Perry, known for including positive messages in his plays and films revolving around his Christian faith and belief practices, used his platform of influence and encourage others to hold on to their faith during this time. As fear and anxiety kicked in as a result of the coronavirus, Perry partnered with some of his favourite singers in a song challenge, asking them to sing this gospel classic, “He’s Got This Whole World in His Hands.” Perry wanted to let everyone know that there’s something of a higher power involved in all of this. But, is it true? Does God still have the whole world in his hands? How do we remain hopeful in a world that seems hopelessly broken? How do we continue to trust a God that seems conspicuously absent? How do we find peace in a world that is spinning out of control? If you've ever asked questions like these, you are not alone. And, you're not the first. Uncertainty is nothing new. And the uncertainty we face today is no different from the uncertainty faced by the people we read about in the Bible. And like them, we are left to question God's faithfulness, his presence, his concern.
