One Thing I Do
When I was younger I used to fight with my sister. We are only 16 months apart and she was incredibly annoying. The worst thing was she was cleverer than me and whenever we got into an argument, she thought faster than I did. Usually I got very frustrated and angry very quickly, turning a minor disagreement into a screaming match. I’m sure those of you who had infuriatingly clever siblings can relate. Usually mum or dad would simply tell us to go to our rooms and eventually it would all settle down. If the disagreement had been particularly bad however, we would be given a lecture and told to shake hands. I’ll admit that every single time I shook hands in those situations I still wanted to shake my sisters head off. I don’t know why we do it as parents, but I did it to my kids, forcing them to shake hands, even though I knew they still wanted to kill each other. On the outside it looked as if our relationship was all good and patched up. On the inside however this wasn’t the truth. Sometimes in our relationship with God we can find ourselves slipping into a belief that our actions and behaviours reflect our relationship, rather than taking the time to actually work on our relationship. It’s easier perhaps to shake hands with God, to do all the right outward things, and not really take the time to consider the true state of our relationship. In his letter to the church in Philippi, Paul writes from prison that the one thing he does is to press on or press into the Godly life that comes from a healthy relationship with God.
