Psalm 133

About 15 years ago Rebecca and I had the opportunity to meet an acappella quartet named “The Idea of North.” We were even fortunate enough to hear them warm up and perform live when they sung at an event we organised in Canberra. Their combined voices, with no instrumental backing, were magical and entrancing. The music seems so much larger than should be possible with just four voices. The same thing was experienced when people listened to the best barbershop quartets. The vocalists sang so well that the harmonies swirled and mixed with such power that it seemed as though there was an extra singer. For the best singing groups whole is greater than the sum of their parts. In the book of Psalms David writes poetically about this kind of unity and harmony. He describes it as good and beautiful when people work together in unity. In fact, he claims that this kind of unity is the key to all of the blessings God has for humanity including eternal life.
