Marie Kondo has written a number of books and also has a television show. Marie attempts to help people unclutter their homes, getting rid of things they don’t really need. Her method is quite simple, if something does not ‘spark joy’ then get rid of it.
Interestingly enough, in the events leading up to, and immediately following, the birth of Christ, there was not really much that sparked joy.
Mary is a very young, unmarried, woman, who was supposed to be a virgin but who had fallen pregnant. In that time the shame would have been incredible. Not only would she suffer as an object of contempt, but her whole family would also be ‘tarred with the same brush’. On top of that, Mary is due to marry Joseph. He truly loves her and decides to stay with her and is also exposed to humiliation and ridicule.
Just about the time Mary is due to give birth they discover that they have to travel to Bethlehem for a Census. Following a long and difficult journey they are forced to stay in a barn where Mary gives birth to a baby boy. In the middle of the muck, filth and dirt of a cattle feed trough.
Sometime later, Joseph, Mary, and the baby, have to flee to Egypt as refugees. They got wind that tyrant King Herod planned to kill anyone he thought was a threat to his throne.
None of this really ‘sparks joy’ yet the overall understanding and announcement in scripture is that through the birth of Jesus Christ JOY has been proclaimed. So, what really is JOY?
